Child Speechreading
(ToCS)
Speechreading is a skill which is required for deaf children to access the language
of the hearing community,
commonly known as “ lip reading”. In this paper describe about a new test for
deaf people, that is, the development a Test of Child Speechreading (ToCS). The purpose of this test
are to measure speech reading and norm for speechreading ability in
school-aged deaf and hearing children. The test is design in use a game format. There are three subtests of
ToCs that measure speechreading skill at three different psycholinguistic
levels are Word, Sentences and Short stories.
Procedure for ToCS is the deaf
people listening video that to do by speaker in the video and every instruction
that speaker give were presented on the screen. The first, Word and Sentences tests there were 15 items in each
test. The test same with a match between the choices of images to what speakers
said without sound. The following instructions were given “The man or
woman will say a word (or sentence). Then you will see four
pictures. The second, Short stories, the participant saw a silent video clip of
either the male or female speaker telling a short story. The participant answered the question by selecting the
correct picture from an array of four. Then you can ask two questions about the story. After each question, you will
see four pictures and
you have to answer by clicking on one of the pictures. This test followed by deaf and hearing participants, the test is
reliable because many participants are come back to follow it again. ToCS is
related with vocabulary and reading ability. For deaf children, TOCS was
related to productive vocabulary and performance on ToCS was
significantly related to reading accuracy and
reading comprehension in both deaf and hearing children.
So, this test through speechreading
can help children for deaf of hearing when they are learning to read also through
Test of Child Speechreading significantly related with reading comprehension of
the children.
